CHALLENGE STORY REVIEWS

WHAT  MADE US GO THE WAY WE WENT

The statement short and sweet definitely applies here. This was a brief moment in time where the boys showed the depth of their friendship and concern for deeper feelings. It was touching. Thanks

With a short story you can say so much and single scenes can reveal a lot of emotions... I have read somewhere a gun in a holster can never outdraw a gun already in a hand... And not even Kid Curry can top that. I like that you describe his way of using his weapon. Despite this, the good part of his soul is full of self-accusation. I'm glad Heyes can convince Kid to see life is not always fair. Fate is a whore sometimes, and sometimes a goddess... Good use of the weather. After a storm, sunshine follows. Friends can remind each other not to forget that.

MAKING THE  LEAP

Wow! Incredible! This was spellbinding - I could easily see it happening, both in the show or in real life. Good writing!

I believe, being dependent on good, fast horses, the boys are able to see if the pedigree of a horse helps them out. Those horses were fine jumpers. Good decision to jump side by side, one horse pulls the other one along. Speaks for Heyes' and Curry's riding skills, nevertheless. How desperate do you have to be to try such a stunt? With enough adrenaline in man and beast a lot is possible. To surmount the gap for freedom - that's the stuff successful heroes are made of. Faith and fear can move mountains...

DO WE STAY OR DO WE GO

I liked the way this story moved. We know of the conflict we've seen it before. This story laid it out in a reasonable manner. The Kid is the hothead of the two and Heyes has learned sometimes all that is needed is a little time and space.

ABSENT FRIENDS

This is such a good story, even if it is heart wrenching. Both of them are too stubborn for their own good. I hope that there is more to the story?

Both as stubborn as each other, I would love

to read what happens next.

PLANTING

What a fun happy story! You've imagined exactly what it would be like for Heyes and Curry if their amnesty ever did come through. Very good imagination, and very nicely written!

I could imagine the boys being stumped for their next move once they got the amnesty, and then, having decided on their futures, using Poker as a means to get the money to get them started.  I could easily picture them in the careers you chose for them, and living happily ever after in Denver.  A nice touch to have them plant a tree in memory of their families and to mark the start of their new lives.  Good story.

FALL

This was a pleasant Ah story. Simple and sweet. We can all use one whether we admit it or not.

FRAGILE

Another will they won't they in the game of amnesty. Poor Kid with his fiery temper combined with drinking gets into more fixes. Good character use. Nice job.

A VERY QUIET CHRISTMAS

A lovely little story of how adversity can be turned to advantage. There really was never a question that Heyes would recover, because they had eachother's caring. And they got to enjoy the kind of Christmas that they probably had secretly wanted for some time. Sweet and relaxing. Thank you!

I think I would have named this Simple Pleasures, because that's what it was for me. After their close call escape from the posse and Heyes being hurt, where they ended up was like taking a deep breath. Sometimes these shorter stories can do that for us. The quieter second half can touch a part of us which long for good company, plain wholesome food, and the quiet only being out in nature can bring. This story did that for me. I enjoyed the meal, the company, and the peacefulness. Thanks for the break

THE TRAIN

I really enjoyed this. Full of action and a bit of h/c too.  I could visualize the whole scene, with Kid trying to outrun the train, before it got to Heyes. Well done.

BEST PRESENT EVER

Delightful, and the perfect sentiment for Christmas. Curry did indeed get the ‘best present ever’.

Guest: December 2022

You absolutely nailed what the best present ever would be! The emotions in this story were strong and felt very real. I enjoyed the many "modern" medical inventions you talked about, and I found the Kid's attempts at spiritual healing to be exactly what he would have done. I would recommend this story to anyone who wants to understand what true friendship is all about.

goldieasj: December 2022

What a great story. You can feel Kid's desperation about whether or not Heyes will survive and how his life would be forever changed if he didn't. A heartfelt prayer can work wonders and it did

A NEW YEAR MIRACLE

I loved your story. Han still having the watch, that he kept it for all of that time, was so comforting. Knowing in his heart that he and Jed would meet again. Of course he is going to convince Jed to join the gang, but he is going to make Jed think that is his own idea to so do. I would have loved for the story to be another, say 5,000 words or so long. lol.

Ginger: December 2023

What a great idea for the method of reconciliation after an argument that might have ended Heyes's and the Kid's friendship forever! Coincidence? Or divine setup? Whatever it was, Heyes made the most of it. Your story was beautiful and realistic. Thank you very much for this wonderful piece!
