Eleanor, You've done it again! And this is superb! The story was clever and original throughout. I won't give anything away (for anyone who hasn't read the story yet), but I loved the position you had Heyes and the Kid occupying, and the unusual situation Heyes faced, ultimately with dignity and an acceptance of events. Well done!

Glad to see a new story from you. It was certainly an original idea, I don't recall ever reading one quite like it, and as always it was very emotional.  Curry did a great job helping Heyes to face up to his feelings and take the first step towards reconciliation. Hope to see more from you.

Another wonderful story, Eleanor! I really loved Heyes studying law & getting so far and the Kid running a horse ranch. It doesn't surprise me that they fought hard to be successful. My favorite was the Kid being there and knowing what his friend and partner needed to grieve. Loved it!

BLINDSIDED

Blindsided [R]

So sad, but very believable. I could imagine Heyes reacting just the way you describe - trying to put it to one side and making out he was fine until he was forced to acknowledge what had happened, when Kid was there to help him through it, as always.  Wonderful story!

That was touching. It would be hard finding out something that important years after the fact. What could have been.? Alice had good reasons for not telling him, but that doesn't really help when it is so new. Kid came up with a really good plan, glad that Heyes stuck it out and didn't get off of he train as he threatened. I think they both need to retire and just enjoy life, they could meet some really nice younger ladies (they are still very attractive and active), and still have a family.

What a lovely, touching story. Paths crossed, people lost, lives that might have been, and a bond everlasting. This story was well worth the wait. Glad to see you writing once again.

Thoroughly enjoyed your story with Heyes as a judge, finding out he had had a son. Have you thought about doing a slightly different version of almost the same story? If Heyes found out he had a child, still alive, it would open up a world of possible story ideas. And perhaps it could be a daughter rather than a son. Either way, I think it would be an awesome story, and I think you’d do a good job!

I am sure Heyes would make a fine Judge, seeing things from both ways so a great occupation for him after amnesty. And I can see Curry as a horse rancher. A very touching and emotional story. Luckily for Heyes his partner is always there to offer support and in this case solutions to ease the pain of loss.

I could see Heyes and Curry in those professions and having a ranch together somewhere secluded. Loved the idea of Heyes struggling to adapt to modern things like telephones.  This whole story was very believable even though sad. As always Kid is there to help and support him.  A compelling read.

What a shock would that be, to discover you had a son only to learn he had died without you even knowing of his existence? It would indeed turn your life upside down, thinking of the ‘what iffs’ of it all. This was a very believable scenario and I could see Heyes and Kid reacting exactly as you wrote them. A very touching read.  Look forward to more from you.

One thing I very much like in your stories is that they are so well thought through. There is said a lot in other comments already, I don't want to repeat that, I agree with everything. But one point I would like to emphasize; it is very believable regarding the time they lived in, that there were offsprings existing, probably unknown ones. Your chosen title is great, one thing Heyes never liked is to be blindsighted. For me, his reactions are very much in character. Though he never was someone to allow others to get too close to his soul, his regret is understandable, thinking of his advanced age. If you have such a friend as Curry, who knows you so well and who is not afraid to possibly disgruntle you, that's more worth than anything, even a family of your own. You can choose your friends but not your family. A great conclusion after getting amnesty, finding fitting jobs and financial independence.
